Cardinal Studio

Richard Cardinal

I have been creating art for 15 years. My career started upon reading and working with the sample art theory and drawings in Dr. Betty Edward's “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”. Her exercises uncovered a latent talent and stimulated a whole new creative world. My development continued through attending the Renaissance School of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. Miriam Berkowitz, a master artist, became my personal instructor. She reinforced the concepts of values, shapes, depth, edges, color, and design and, importantly, taught me to believe in my talents. At the easel my goal is to create and paint an image in realism and beauty capturing evidence of His Creation and His world's great beauty, in landscapes and flora, or through our friends in the animal kingdom, be they birds, butterfly, wolf, cat, dog, etc.

My medium preferences are diverse. I love both the feel of oil brush and palette knife strokes on a canvas, and/or the finger manipulation of pastel chalk, hard or soft, on sanded textured pastel art paper. I also enjoy the relatively new medium of water color pencil.

The majority of my work is accomplished in my studio using as my source personal scenic photos taken while traveling in Europe, or, local, here in the great Southwest, or in the Midwest, each with its own particular beauty.  Other sources include my customers personal photos of their pets, still life's, or their travel photos to create for them beautiful unique personal comissioned art pieces.
